Two calculators and a readiness check

Enter your own figures — these are arithmetic tools, not a live fare feed.

Two ways to make the same trip

See which of two concrete travel options actually costs less once time and extras are weighed in, not just the headline fare.

Assumptions this uses
  • Figures you enter are treated as the full, all-in cost for each option, including any reservation or seat fees you add under extras.
  • Hours are door-to-door, not just time on the train, so include realistic transfer and waiting time on both sides.
  • The comparison does not weigh comfort or scenery — only the cost and time figures you enter.

Limitations: This does not check real fares, availability, or whether either option is actually bookable on your dates — confirm both directly with the operator or a booking platform before committing.

Quick tip

Check the booking-window opening date first

Advance fares on many networks are released in tranches from the moment a booking window opens — often 3 to 12 months ahead depending on the operator. Booking on day one of that window, once your dates are fixed, is usually the single biggest lever on price you actually control.

Pass vs individual tickets

Work out whether a rail pass beats buying point-to-point tickets for the journeys you'll actually take.

Assumptions this uses
  • Average fare and reservation figures are applied evenly across all journeys — enter a realistic average for your specific routes, not a single cheapest fare you saw once.
  • Flexibility value is a number you assign yourself for what not having to pre-book is worth to you; leave it at zero for a pure cost comparison.
  • The result compares total cost only and does not account for pass day-blocks you might not fully use.

Limitations: This does not check current pass prices, current point-to-point fares, or availability — confirm both directly with the pass provider and the operator before buying.

Readiness checklist

A quick readiness check before you commit to a booking — six honest questions, not a guarantee.

Assumptions this uses
  • This checklist reflects general good practice for comparing rail options and does not check any specific route, price or rule.

Limitations: Completing the checklist does not confirm a specific booking is correct — always verify the actual fare, terms and schedule with the operator directly.
